What is DEF?
To answer that question we need to go start back in 1999 when the EPA launched the National Clean Diesel Campaign (NCDC). In 1999 diesel exhaust was implicated to increase the risk of lung cancer and respitory disease. Trucks and busses comprise 28% of the Nitrogen Oxides (NOX) and are 20% of the Particulate Matter (PM) from U.S. mobile source emissions. The plan was to over eleven years to reduce diesel emmissions.
Begining in 2009 Light Duty Tier 2 (Silverados, F-250 and Ram pickups) requiring the use of SCR technology requiring the use of DEF. Heavy-duty diesel highway vehicles began the requirement for vehicles manufactured after Jan, 1 2010 requiring the use of DEF. All other off-road farming & construction equipment, railroad engines and marine vessels will be fully phased in by 2017.
DEF is essentially a solution of UREA and primarily water used to reduce NOX emissions in diesel vehicles to near zero the result being a very clean diesel.
